Common questions
Anxiety FAQs.
Some anxiety is normal. It's worth getting help when worry, panic or nervousness shows up most days, is hard to control, and gets in the way of work, sleep, relationships or daily life.
For most people, it's cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), an SSRI or SNRI medication, or both. These first-line treatments help many patients, and we'll help you find the right combination.
Most SSRIs and SNRIs take 4 to 8 weeks at an effective dose to reach their full effect. Some people notice small improvements sooner.
Benzodiazepines can be habit-forming, so we use them carefully and usually only short-term, if at all. Our focus is on treatments that work well long-term, like SSRIs, SNRIs and therapy.
Not as a first treatment for anxiety on its own. Both are for adults with depression that has not responded to antidepressants. If you have that kind of depression along with anxiety, treating the depression often helps the anxiety too.
Anxiety is mostly about fear and worry about what might happen. Depression is mostly about low mood, emptiness and loss of interest. Many people have both, which is why a full evaluation matters.
Not always. Many patients contact us directly. Some insurance plans require a referral from your primary care doctor, and we'll confirm what yours needs during your screening call.
We accept most major insurance plans, and coverage is confirmed on your screening call. Most commercial plans cover psychiatric evaluation and medication management for anxiety.
Yes. Many patients keep their own therapist while we manage the psychiatric and medication side of their care. With your permission, we coordinate with them.
We treat anxiety at our Ypsilanti office, easily accessible from Ann Arbor, Plymouth, Canton, Brighton, Chelsea and Jackson, as well as surrounding areas in Washtenaw, Wayne, Livingston and Jackson counties.
